This Thai driver converted his old school bus into a roving grocery store after the Covid-19 pandemic decimated his livelihood.

Sanya Pengchata, 50, modified the vehicle when students in his village of Bu Chao Khun in Nakhon Ratchasima province stopped attending in-person classes two years ago.

After spending months doing nothing, Sanya came up with the idea of selling groceries, vegetables, and fruits on his bus that was just gathering dust in his garage.

The resourceful local would drive the roaming store to different markets in the Wang Nam Khiao District, allowing residents to buy essential goods without venturing too far from their homes.

The passenger seats in the bus have been removed and replaced with various trays and baskets carrying fresh produce.

Sanya said: ‘People are surprised to see the bus. They would come to take pictures and buy many things to bring back home.

'Visitors can enter the bus and select fruits and vegetables just like in any regular supermarket. The only difference is that there is no air conditioning and only a fan is installed inside. '

Despite the small size of his business, Sanya's earnings are lucrative enough to replace his previous day job.

He said: 'Now the schools have reopened, but I have decided not to return to being a school bus driver.'
