A wild elephant was electrocuted in northeastern India's Assam after it came in contact with a live wire under the electric pole.

The incident took place near Marangi in the Golaghat district on December 8.

Visuals showed a dead elephant lying under an electric pole. People from nearby villages had gathered around it and were performing the last farewell rituals by applying tilak (a mark worn by a Hindu on the forehead) to it. Diyas (a small cup-shaped oil lamp made of baked clay) were placed in front of a dead elephant and it was being worshiped with incense sticks. It was also garlanded with flowers and people stood before one by one with folded hands.

Looking at the long fallen wires of the electric pole, it is being inferred that the death was due to electrocution.
