A Thai zoo is using heaters to keep the animals warm during the country's cold season.

Chiang Mai zoo also installed warm light bulbs in several spots to ward off the chilly nighttimes when temperatures plunge to 10 degrees Celsius.

Staff also fed vitamin supplements to the animals to keep their immune systems strong.

For a comfortable sleep, they put extra straws for the deers while the water creatures received a boiler system.

Zoo director Wuttichai Muangman said: ‘We ensure that the animals would be safe during the cold. We have wind shelters where they can hide when the cold wind blows.'

Tiny turtle houses have been installed for the African spurred tortoise to rest in, while the macaws and parrots have heaters.

The only Orangutan, Uncle Sam was given a custom-made hemp sack to wear and blankets to cover his body at night. To celebrate the championship of Argentina, Chiang Mai zoo had also stuck up the Argentina flag on Uncle Sam's blanket.

The zoo director added: ‘The zoo ensures Uncle Sam stays warm during the cold season with blankets and sweaters as he lives in the highest part of the zoo with the coolest weather.'
