Motorist drowns and dies after getting bumped into drain by ambulance
A motorist drowned and died after getting bumped into a drain by an ambulance that ran a red light at a crossing in central China.
In the two dash cam footages from the driver's car, the 60-year-old motorist can be seen driving normally at the crossing in Wuhan, Hubei province, tapping his brake and moving on, with the traffic light straight ahead of him flashing green, indicating 13 seconds left. When the green light jumped to 10 seconds, the body of the private car shook violently, flipped over and then fell into the roadside ditch about 1.15 meters deep.
According to the driver's son, what happened was that an ambulance ran a red light to bring a patient to the hospital. The ambulance hit the other car, pushing it into the ditch.
Firefighters pulled the white car out 37 minutes after the crash but the driver was already dead. The medical examination showed that he died by drowning.
The ambulance involved in the accident belongs to Wuhan Dongxihu Emergency Center. The head of the centre said there were six people in the ambulance, one critically ill patient, one family member, a doctor, a nurse, a stretcher bearer and a driver. After the accident, the driver tried to get into the water but failed to save the man; the doctor from the hospital worried about his patient's condition and did not go into the water; the nurse was injured in the crash, breaking her rib. The stretcher bearer also did get into the ditch to help the driver..
Mr. Shen said that after the accident, the ambulance staff did not actively rescue his father so he eventually died.
On December 26, the Dongxihu District emergency Center in Wuhan said the ambulance driver had gotten into the water trying to help. He failed to save the driver though because the car had flipped over. The medical staff of the ambulance have been suspended for investigation.
The emergency center said that "we will not escape responsibility, the case remains to be determined by the traffic police.”
The video was filmed on December 16 and provided by local media with permission.
