What some older Australians do in summer - Speed Sailors getting their kicks in Peel Inlet

Speed Sailing is a worldwide sport that generally appeals to older windsurfers who have had enough of the dangers associated with slalom and wave sailing. Western Australia has some of the best and most experienced speed sailors in the world. It’s a team sport that uses very accurate GPS watches that are linked to a minimum of 10 satellites to give accurate speed and position data every 1/10 of a second. Speed Sailors go out on the water in the right conditions and to get the highest speed over a range of distance disciplines and distances in set times and speeds of jibing. Considering this is a worldwide sport, the little Perth-based Pinnaroos team is regularly in the top three or four worldwide. The average age of the Speed Sailing community is about 57, so they are not young yobs. The oldest member of the Pinnaroos is 81. Steve Brown clocked 64 kilometres per hour (over 39 miles per hour) during his run. These videos were shot on a very windy, overcast day at Coodanup on the eastern shore of Peel Inlet.
