Chinese motorist encounters Earth's rarest species of leopard
A motorist encountered a rare Amur leopard in northern China.
Video filmed in the city of Hunchun in Jilin Province on February 8th shows, an Amur leopard wandering around a snow-covered forest.
In another clip, the leopard was seen walking onto a highway road.
According to a motorist named Lyu, it was his first time seeing the rare animal and the distance between him and the leopard was only around 10 metres.
According to reports, another citizen already spotted a wild Amur leopard on the side of the highway on February 4.
Officials from the Hunchun branch of the Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park confirmed that the animal was indeed an Amur leopard and emphasised its rare presence.
According to WWF, IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species classifies the Amur leopard as "Critically Endangered" and the estimated last remaining viable wild population is 57.
The Amur leopard is found in a small area in the Russian Province of Primorsky Krai, between Vladivostok and the Chinese border.
The video was provided by local media with permission.
