Explosions and gunshots could be heard as armed men attacked a police compound in Karachi, Pakistan, on February 17.

Footage shows lasers being pointed at the police building while armed forces move in.

According to reports, two of the assailants have been killed and one security official has been wounded.

City police chief Javed Alam Odho confirmed the attack and said police and paramilitary troops were responding.

No group has claimed responsibility for the assault so far.

Gunmen barged into a police office on Karachi’s main Sharea Faisal highway on today

evening, with loud sounds of gunfire and explosions echoing though the surrounding area.

Initial reports suggested that the terrorists started firing indiscriminately as soon as they barged into the office.

DIG South Irfan Baloch said that at least six terrorists have managed to enter the Karachi Police Chief’s office through rear entrance.

“A heavy contingent of police and rangers has arrived. We are trying to arrest terrorists dead or alive,” he added.

The top police officers are present in the building, the DIG said, adding that terrorists are present on the first and second floors of the building.

In a statement, Rangers said eight to ten terrorists attacked the office.

Police officials said following the attack, the police personnel retaliated immediately and personnel from other police stations and police commandos have also been summoned to deal with the emergency situation.

The state-run PTV news reported that Pakistan Rangers and elite police force have cordoned off the area near AIG Office Karachi and a counter terrorist operation has been launched against the terrorists.

“According to incoming reports hand grenades and automatic guns were used by no less than eight terrorists,” it added.
