CCTV captured the dramatic moment a swollen motorcycle battery burst into flames outside a house in Thailand.

The lithium polymer battery used for electric vehciles was sitting in a garage in Ayutthaya province on March 18 when it exploded.

Homeowner Siriwat Pakchareon, 29, said the battery was intended for use in a racing motorcycle. It was slightly swollen but he had insisted it was still safe to use.

Siriwat said he was lucky he had placed it on a plastic stool in the garage, as he normally stored it under the motorcycle seat.

His friend also happened to be passing by, alerting him to the fire before it could spread.

Siriwat said: 'I wouldn't dare to store car batteries inside my house again. I was lucky this time since I had it on the stool in the garage.

'I would like to warn other mechanics who deal with batteries to dispose of them if they are bloated. They can explode any time, so it's better to throw them away than store them.'

Lithium-ion batteries expand due to gas build-up as the electrolytes inside the battery decompose.
