A school's roof was peeled away by a vicious tropical storm that struck northeastern Thailand this morning.

Sheets of corrugated iron from a building at the Ban Nong Chik school were blown away by raging winds as the storm clobbered the Phimai District of Nakhon Ratchasima province on March 28.

The onslaught exposed the two-storey building's wooden rafters, with rainwater leaking into classrooms and damaging equipment.

The storm had also uprooted trees and battered homes in the province.

Local government agencies conducted a damage assessment, and promised to provide compensation for affected residents.

The provincial disaster prevention and mitigation office said it was monitoring the weather forecast and has identified several high-risk districts.

Locals have been warned to closely monitor weather updates from government agencies.

The Thai Meteorological Department also urged homeowners to strengthen their houses in preparation for seasonal monsoon rains.

Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia are approaching their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms.
