In newly-released dashcam footage, the driver of a Jeep Renegade is plowed into by a drunk driver at nearly 50 mph - moments after the Renegade driver asked the passenger to buckle up.

"Hey, glad you got your seatbelt on, right?" the dashcam driver asks his passenger, seconds after the impact.

"Yeah, thank the Lord!," replies unnamed the passenger.

The driver of the Renegade, 39-year old Doug Collins of Littleton, stopped to help a motorist who was having engine troubles on the shoulder of northbound Wadsworth Blvd, between Chatfield Ave. and Ken Caryl Ave in Jefferson County, Colorado.

Collins failed to get the motorist's car started, The motorist asked to be driven to the nearby house of one of his friends. Collins obliged.

The motorist initially got into Collins' 2016 Jeep Renegade without buckling up. Collins asked him to buckle his seatbelt before they set off.

About a mile and half north on Wadsworth Blvd. - near the intersection with Bowles Ave. - a 2009 Dodge Nitro tore off Collins' rear passenger side wheel while Collins was stopped waiting at a traffic light.

The Nitro bounced off Collins' Renegade and hit a Chrysler Pacifica and a Toyota 4Runner. The Pacifica had its front passenger wheel torn off, and the 4Runner sustained significant rear-end damage.

The Dodge Nitro came to rest facing south in the northbound lanes, its front end heavily damaged and nearly all of its airbags deployed.

All four cars were totaled.

Jefferson Country Sheriff's Deputies, responding to reports of a car driving recklessly on northbound Wadsworth, were on the scene within seconds of the accident happening.

Photos provided by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department show the Dodge Nitro's speedometer frozen at 48 mph at the time of impact.

Amazingly, no one was injured in the accident. However, West Metro Fire & Rescue needed to use heavy machinery to extract the driver of the Dodge Nitro from his car.

Collins had a trunk full of groceries at the time of the impact. The only casualty among the groceries was a single broken egg.

The driver of the Dodge Nitro, a 34-year-old Lakewood resident with a history of driving under the influence of alcohol, was charged with DUI.

In March 2023, the driver of the Dodge Nitro plead guilty to one count of driving under the influence. The driver was sentenced to two years in prison, with one suspended. He was also sentenced to 3 years probation, more than 120 hours of community service, and about $3,000 in fines and court costs.
