STORYLINE:
Li Quan is a chief director for technology innovation at a Chinese energy company in north China's Hebei Province.
After getting a Ph.D. degree from Cambridge University and working abroad a dozen of years, he returned to China to work in 2021.
As an expert in high-temperature superconductivity, Li considers this opportunity as a contribution to China's zero-carbon energy transition, which he believes is a vital endeavor in his life.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): LI QUAN, Chief Technology Innovation Director, ENN Group
"ENN Group has revealed its ambition in developing nuclear fusion technology. One of the key technologies involved in nuclear fusion is superconducting magnet technology, which requires the use of superconducting materials to make magnets. This happens to be the focus of my research. I feel that it's a great opportunity for me to contribute to our country's own nuclear fusion project. I believe that it's a very meaningful endeavor in my life. China's 'dual carbon' goal means that we will shift towards zero-carbon energy technologies in the future. We need to develop a stable zero-carbon technology, and currently, nuclear fusion seems to be (one of) the best options."
According to Li, now is the ideal time for overseas talents to come back and contribute to China's high-quality development.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): LI QUAN, Chief Technology Innovation Director, ENN Group
"Firstly, China is at a crucial period of development. It's transitioning from quantity-oriented to quality-oriented growth, so we need the collaborative efforts of numerous scientists and researchers, both domestic and international.
Secondly, I think our country is developing rapidly. We have many scientific research platforms and innovation centers, which makes it the best time for overseas talents to choose to return to China."
