This is the moment a hungry elephant grabbed a tourist's arm with its trunk to ask for bananas.

Holidaymaker Kathy was walking next to the jumbos holding a bunch of the yellow fruit at a zoo in Surat Thani, southern Thailand when one of the animals reached over the fence to stop her on June 2.

The cheeky elephant tried to swipe the food from her hands, and only let her pass when it was finally offered a banana.

As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
