Near-miss Shark Bite
By Shannine O’Neill
**EXCLUSIVE**
THIS MAN had a near-miss SHARK BITE from a 200-pound nurse shark coming inches from his face.
Freediver and underwater photographer Ibrahim Shafeeg (37) from Maafushi, Maldives was videoing his fellow diver Ali izhaan (25) when a nurse shark came extremely close to biting Ali.
Ibrahim was diving with his friend and fellow freediver Ali in the Vaavu shark point near the Dhiggiri resort in the Maldives to film and interact with the sharks there.
The pair came across a pocket of over 30 nurse sharks surrounding them.
Nurse sharks are generally around eight-feet long and over 200-pounds, but are seen as quite a docile breed of sharks.
As both experienced divers, Ibrahim and Ali were not fazed by the multitude of sharks surrounding them and took the unique opportunity to swim among them in only scuba gear.
After around an hour of swimming among the nurse sharks and other fish such as rainbow runners, Jack fish, red snappers and remoras, the pair had quite a rude awakening from one of the nurse sharks.
Swimming freely, Ali was approached by a nurse shark that came inches away from his face, giving a warning that there is always a possibility of getting bitten and to keep their space.
Ibrahim caught the near-miss on camera and the pair immediately vacated the scene afterwards.
“We were on a snorkeling and free dive tour,” he said.
“There were more than 30 nurse sharks there.
“There were rainbow runners, Jack fish, red snappers and remoras.
“We were diving for an hour in the Vaavu shark point.”
Although Ibrahim was not the one that nearly got bitten by a nurse shark, he acknowledges that it was terrifying to witness and would be incredibly scary to nearly get bitten, although he has never been bitten himself.
“Well it’s scary but I’ve never felt the bite yet,” he said.
“The sharks are always there.
“They get distracted by us freediving and moving too close to them.
“My opinion is always to keep distance from sharks and be always careful while snorkeling with sharks.”
