Thick plumes of smoke rose from Taal Volcano as tremors continued.

Footage shows a large cloud-like mass building up above the caldera in Batangas province, the Philippines today.

Resident Arnold Palo said: ‘I pass by every day and the smoke is never gone. We are starting to worry about what will happen but we try to stay positive.'

Just last week, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded 13 earthquakes around the volcano in under 24 hours of observation. Each tremor lasted at least two minutes.

The government agency said: ‘The volcano's height has reached 2,400 meters, and there has been a significant volume of emission, with the ash plume drifting towards the northwest.'

Taal Volcano remains on Alert Level 1, which means that there is an increase in volcanic earthquakes and steam or gas activity.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands inside the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
