This is the dramatic moment an out-of-control pick-up truck crashed into parked cars while avoiding a stray dog.

Driver Somsak, 39, was speeding along a road in Chonburi, Thailand, when a mutt suddenly sprinted across the tarmac on July 2 evening.

Somsak steered his truck away, but ploughed through five motorcycles and another pick-up truck in front of a stall. But instead of waiting for the bike owners to arrive, he fled in a panic, his vehicle swerving out-of-control as he made a chaotic getaway.

Banbung district police officers said they received a report at around 8:50 pm and arrived at the scene. They said there were no injuries from the accident.

Investigators said they retrieved security footage from the area and identified Somsak since his license plate was visible in the video.

Somsak met with the motorcycle owners, who are seeking compensation from him, to apologise and give them gift baskets.

He said: 'I was forced to swerve to avoid a dog that ran across the road, but I ended up crashing with the other vehicles. I was so shocked that I drove away from the scene, but I have realised my mistake now.'

Accompanied by his insurance officer at the police station, Somsak said he is willing to pay the appropriate compensation.

Onlooker Karun Mo-kham, 58, said Somsak may have been drunk as he was driving at a high speed before losing control when he avoided the dog running onto the road.

Banbung Police said Somsak was charged with reckless driving resulting in damage to property, and hit and run.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
