Monitor lizards wrestling over territorial fight causes damage in resident's home
Two monitor lizards in a wrestling match over territory damaged a resident's yard.
The two 5ft-long male reptiles broke through the wooden fence and cracked some of the panels off as they fought in Samut Prakan province, Thailand on June 12 afternoon.
Footage shows the lizards locked in a tight grip using their upper limbs while trying to topple each other to the ground.
One of them was able to push its opponent to the wet floor while a resident scared them away with a broom, and another pointed to the damage they had created.
The lizards crawled under a parked car and escaped underneath a house while they were being chased away.
Resident Chartree Eiangjaeng said: ‘We sprayed them with water, but the monitor lizards continued wrestling. They did not release their grip, so I used a broom.'
Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.
The reptiles are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite, which sometimes carries harmful bacteria. The Godzilla-like reptiles are also a protected species in the country so their population thrives.
