Rare 'double suns' surprises commuters in southern China
A man named Chen was left astonished during his commute to work, as he spotted what appeared to be 'two suns' in the sky in southern China.
Riding on a shared bike, he decided to capture the breathtaking sight at around 7:10 am near the Jinzhou Road Station of Chengdu Metro Line 2 on July 18.
"I thought the sky was particularly beautiful at that moment, so I simply snapped a picture," Chen explained. From the image taken on his phone, two suns - one big, one small - are clearly visible. "It was too glaring to look at with the naked eye," he added.
Chen revealed that the unusual spectacle disappeared approximately 40 minutes later.
Some residents speculated that it was a sun dog, a rare atmospheric optical phenomenon. However, Zeng Yang, Vice President of the Sichuan Astronomical Science Popularization Association, and Ji Yun, a popular science expert studying rare celestial wonders, both denied this theory.
According to Zeng, the video does not show any high clouds or a large amount of ice crystals, which are necessary for the occurrence of sun dogs. Instead, Zeng suggests that the 'extra sun' may have been a lens flare caused by the flat field aberration of multiple lenses in the phone or a piece of glass in front of the lens.
The video was provided by Chen.
