Severe weather ravaged Thai tourist island Phuket leaving roads submerged in floods.

Footage shows water engulfing roads on the island as monsoon rains battered Phuket province on July 19.

Wirote Lewcharoenthrap of the Thai Meteorological Department wrote in a weather advisory this morning: 'During July 19 and 20, the rather strong southwest monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea and southern Thailand's west coast. For this reason, the abundance of rain and heavy rain to very heavy rain will occur in some areas.'

Waves in the Andaman Sea could reach up to 10 feet, while seamen have been instructed to avoid setting out. Isolated thunderstorms were still expected to hammer Phuket today, the TMD forecasted.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are approaching their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
