Six people have been killed and dozens more injured as religious riots erupted in the Nuh district, of the Indian state Haryana.

Footage from August 1 shows the aftermath of clashes between Hindu and Muslim groups.

The violence erupted when a Hindu religious procession made its way through a Muslim-dominated area.

Two of the victims have been named as Neeraj and Gurusevak, who were serving as home guards.

The local police force arrested more than 80 people in connection with the violence.

Schools and colleges in Gurugram and Faridabad were closed in response to the clashes.

Six people were killed and at least 70 others, including several policemen, were injured as a mob in Haryana's Nuh district tried to stop a Vishva Hindu Parishad procession, pelting stones and setting cars on fire. Security around religious places has been strengthened.

The violence spread from Nuh to Gurugram within hours. The two home guards who were killed have been identified as Neeraj and Gurusevak. They were part of the Gurugram Police Team which came under attack as they were reaching Nuh. Both the police and administration held meetings with prominent members of both communities to ensure peace.

Police have registered about 40 cases and arrested more than 80 people in connection with the communal violence. All schools and colleges in Gurugram and Faridabad were closed on Tuesday and prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) were imposed in Gurugram and Nuh.
