A magnitude 5.2 earthquake jolted southern Philippines on Wednesday morning, state seismologists said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the queak struck 43 kilometres southeast of Governor Generoso town in Davao Oriental province in the southern island of Mindanao at 8:57 am local time at a depth of 39 kilometres.

The agency warned of potential aftershocks but said no damage was expected.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands inside the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
