Panicked shoppers fled from a mall when a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck southern Philippines on Friday afternoon, 17 November.

Video shows frantic locals fleeing following the strong tremor that shook the GMall shopping centre in Davao City.

Philippine seismology agency PHIVOLCS said in a bulletin that the quake struck at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles) at 4:14 pm local time. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no tsunami was expected.

Damage and aftershocks can be expected from the offshore quake, PHIVOLCS said. Intensity 8 were felt in the southern Philippines provinces of Sarangani and South Cotabato while Intensity 5 was felt in Davao del Sur, it added.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands inside the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
