STORYLINE:

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): FERNANDO MUNOZ, Colombian vlogger
"Do you know what these are?"

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): JAKUB PAWLIK, Vice principal of a local school
"Tell me about it."

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): FERNANDO MUNOZ, Colombian vlogger
"No ideas? These are Chashan dolls.
They are very famous here in Dongguan.
So I want to take you to the place where they make them.
Do you want to go with me?"

SOUNDBITE 4 (English): JAKUB PAWLIK, Vice principal of a local school
"Certainly I do."

SOUNDBITE 5 (English): FERNANDO MUNOZ, Colombian vlogger
"Alright, let's go then."

SOUNDBITE 6 (English): JAKUB PAWLIK, Vice principal of a local school
"Perfect, let's go."

First made in the early years of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Chashan dolls have been well received by people in Dongguan, Guangdong Province and across the Pearl River Delta region in south China.

In Dongguan, families who have newborn baby boys will hold a ceremony during the Spring Festival of the second year. Chashan dolls have become a must for the occasion.

SOUNDBITE 7 (English): JAKUB PAWLIK, Vice principal of a local school
"You see, I always stay on this modern highly developed side of Dongguan. I never knew it had such beautiful well-preserved villages such as this one."

SOUNDBITE 8 (English): FERNANDO MUNOZ, Colombian vlogger
"I know and did you know this village, Nanshe, has actually been awarded as one of China's most charming villages?"

SOUNDBITE 9 (English): JAKUB PAWLIK, Vice principal of a local school
"But I see people living and working here."

SOUNDBITE 10 (English): FERNANDO MUNOZ, Colombian vlogger
"I know what you mean. But this is not a museum. This is actually a residential place for a lot of people."

SOUNDBITE 11 (English): JAKUB PAWLIK, Vice principal of a local school
"And what about the dolls you mentioned before?"

SOUNDBITE 12 (English): FERNANDO MUNOZ, Colombian vlogger
"Glad you ask. Let's go to see them.
Let's go!"

SOUNDBITE 13 (English): JAKUB PAWLIK, Vice principal of a local school
"How cool is that! Feeling it really special."

SOUNDBITE 14 (English): FERNANDO MUNOZ, Colombian vlogger
"This is the thing I've never seen dolls like these anywhere in the world.
Did you know that they are actually an intangible cultural heritage of Guangdong and they have very special folklore characteristics of Dongguan?
So they are unique for this place.
So if I see them anywhere in the world, you will know they're from Dongguan."

SOUNDBITE 15 (English): JAKUB PAWLIK, Vice principal of a local school
"That's perfect.
Hi, master!"

SOUNDBITE 16 (English): FERNANDO MUNOZ, Colombian vlogger
"Hello!"

SOUNDBITE 17 (Chinese): Local doll craftsman
"Hi!"

SOUNDBITE 18 (English): JAKUB PAWLIK, Vice principal of a local school
"Fernando, this can actually make a perfect gift."

SOUNDBITE 19 (English): FERNANDO MUNOZ, Colombian vlogger
"Yes in fact, when I get tired of giving generic presents to people, this is such a great idea because it's so unique of Dongguan. And, well, to tell you the truth, this is one of the reasons why I like to promote Dongguan culture to the world.
It's very unique."

SOUNDBITE 20 (English): JAKUB PAWLIK, Vice principal of a local school
"Amazing, I'm certainly giving this one to my mom. Okay Shifu (master), is it good?"

SOUNDBITE 21 (Chinese): Local doll craftsman
"Good."

SOUNDBITE 22 (English): FERNANDO MUNOZ, Colombian vlogger
"What about mine?"

SOUNDBITE 23 (Chinese): Local doll craftsman
"Nice."

SOUNDBITE 24 (English): JAKUB PAWLIK, Vice principal of a local school
"Thank you. Fernando, what's that sound?"

SOUNDBITE 25 (English): FERNANDO MUNOZ, Colombian vlogger
"Oh, that's something else. We're going to see here.
Check it out.
You see Jakub, the people of Dongguan celebrate a lot of festivals throughout the year.
And at these events, they always entertain the people with Kylin dance, such as this one."

SOUNDBITE 26 (English): FERNANDO MUNOZ, Colombian vlogger
"Kylin dance is a part of folk art accompanied by gongs, drums and suona. There is an old saying that wherever Kylin steps, it will bring good luck. China does a marvelous job of creating a festive atmosphere. During gatherings, festivals and celebrations, people use Kylin dance to cheer up."
