Tunisian Higher Education and Scientific Research Minister Moncef Boukthir said on Monday that tackling climate change requires a range of preventive measures to deal with disasters, including earthquakes and floods.
He made the remarks at the opening of the Arab-Africa Conference on Science and Technology for Disaster Risk Reduction, which kicked off in Tunis on Monday under the theme "Towards a Resilient Future: Arab-Africa science, technology, policy & private sector nexus for disaster risk reduction."
The minister said that reducing natural disasters requires the stepping up of scientific research into natural disaster forecasting and the reinforcement of national and international cooperation in sharing information and experience.
The two-day conference was attended by Mami Mizutori, head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, and researchers from Arab and African countries.
