Female Orange Spider Wasps (Cryptocheilus bicolor; family Pompilidae) are large, colourful spider-hunting wasps from Australia. The solitary female wasp hunts Huntsman Spiders (family Sparassidae) and Wolf Spiders (family Lycosidae), paralysing her prey by stinging its underside. The paralysed spider is then dragged to a chamber in a burrow, where the female wasp lays an egg on it. The wasp larva (grub) feeds on the spider before becoming a pupa in a thin, silky cocoon and then hatches as an adult wasp sometime later. The sting of the Orange Spider Wasp is extremely painful!
