2. SOUNDBITE 2 (English): JAMES LAURENCESON, Director of the Australia-China Relations Institute, University of Technology Sydney
STORYLINE:
An Australian expert has said that China is the economic anchor of the Asia-Pacific region.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): JAMES LAURENCESON, Director of the Australia-China Relations Institute, University of Technology Sydney
"My sense is that when it comes to the Asia Pacific, the focus remains on economic development. I think every country is concerned with resilience now. China is the economic anchor of the Asia Pacific. There's no doubt about that, and it's been growing faster than the regional average for many decades now. And that remains the case today."
China's economic growth has exceeded market expectations by expanding 4.9 percent year on year in the third quarter of 2023. The International Monetary Fund expected the country's real GDP to grow 5.4 percent this year.
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): JAMES LAURENCESON, Director of the Australia-China Relations Institute, University of Technology Sydney
"So if the Chinese economy is growing at (around) 5.5 percent, given that's coming off a very large base already, that's very good news for the region. And certainly, it's good news for Australia."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Sydney, Australia.
