STORYLINE:

Rwandan citizens have said that Chinese-built roads and bridges have not only enhanced accessibility, but also led to improved traffic flow and better livelihoods in their country.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Kinyarwanda): CLEOPHAS JUMAPIRI, Rwandan citizen
"Before the construction of this bridge, there was a significant amount of traffic that led to accidents. After its construction, it is now safe for us to ride, with dedicated lanes for both cars and cyclists. We are grateful to the Chinese company for their excellent work on our roads, particularly on this bridge. They have done a commendable job."

More than 70 percent of Rwanda's national highways and municipal roads were built by Chinese contractors, according to the data from the National Institute of Statistics in Rwanda in 2021.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Kinyarwanda): JEAN DE DIEU RUTAGANDA, Rwandan citizen
"The roads, particularly those constructed by the Chinese, are notable for their durability and capacity, showcasing their impressive capabilities. The roads were built by the Chinese. The road descending from Kicukiro to the taxi park, which was once prone to accidents caused by lorries, has seen a marked decrease in such incidents.
The road is now excellent, with smooth vehicle flow and pedestrians using the designated crossing, zebra crossing. It's a stark contrast with the previous situation when people crossed the road randomly. It's evident now that the situation is vastly improved."

The road construction companies have offered many job opportunities to locals, including refugees from other countries.

SOUNDBITE 3 (Kirundi): ALFRED NTAKIRUTIMANA, Burundian refugee living in Rwanda
"Due to the challenging circumstances of life in Mahama refugee camp, I applied for a job here and was fortunate enough to be offered one. I express my sincere gratitude to the company (China Road and Bridge Corporation) that provided me with this job. This employment opportunity has played a crucial role in helping me overcome various difficulties."
