STORYLINE:

Experts remain upbeat about China's economic prospects in 2024, saying that the country will still be a major contributor to global growth.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): XN IRAKI, Kenyan economist
"I think the prospects are bright. I believe that if the economic prospects of China are bright next year, 2024, the rest of the world is going to benefit, because China is a big importer and China is a big exporter. So a lot of countries depend on China for trade."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): RONNIE LINS, Director of China-Brazil Center for Research and Business
"China plays a crucial role in the global economic recovery. First, through global economic integration, China can offer new opportunities for foreign companies by further opening its market, especially in the service and high-tech sectors. It not only benefits the Chinese economy but also stimulates global growth."

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): ALESSANDRO ZADRO, Head of Research at Italy-China Council Foundation
"In 2023, the Chinese economy should grow around 5.1-5.4 percent. It's performing better in the last quarter compared to the first month of the year. The final push should permit China to reach the goal of overall growth of around 5 percent established by the government in March 2023. The Chinese economy has performed quite well in 2023."

While some sectors in China are feeling the pinch of economic headwinds from both home and abroad, others are emerging from negative impacts faster and stronger than expected.

The country's economy expanded 5.2 percent year on year in the first three quarters of the year, marking the strongest performance among the world's major economies.

Last week, the International Monetary Fund reiterated its upward revision of China's economic growth forecast for 2023 and 2024.

Based on the latest forecast, the IMF expects the Chinese economy "to meet the government's 2023 growth target of around 5 percent."

The agency announced in early November to upgrade its forecast for the Chinese economy for 2023 to 5.4 percent from 5.0 percent, and for 2024 to 4.6 percent from 4.2 percent, as compared with its World Economic Outlook released in October.
