Vertical crack in Beachy Head Cliff. A new vertical crack has appeared at the highest point of the Cliffs at Beachy Head just in front of the lighthouse at the foot of the cliffs below.. The cliffs here are 165 metres tall, and was has been a notorious suicide spot although today Chaplains patrol the cliff edge 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The South Downs National Park Authority which is “responsible for keeping the South Downs a special place” warned people to be wary of the “precarious” section of cliff. “We would always advise people to stay well away from cliff edges and bases. Given the nature of chalk, cliff falls happen at random as part of natural coastal erosion processes. A cliff fall here could endanger the working lighthouse below.
