Ukrainian tourist critically injured when taxi jumps red light and hits him
A Ukrainian tourist was critically injured when he was hit by a taxi that jumped the red light at a junction in Thailand.
Artur Kostenko, 28, was driving through the Sam Kong Intersection on the island of Phuket when he was struck by the cab at around 4:30 pm on December 19.
Dashcam footage shows the helmet-wearing Ukrainian moving forward through the junction on his Yamaha big bike after the light turned green, only to be struck by the Toyota Altis running the red light.
Phuket tourist police said Artur was rushed to the Vachira Phuket Hospital and later transferred to a hospital in Bangkok with 'serious injuries'.
He had entered Phuket on November 2 for a holiday and was staying until January 3.
Artur's Ukrainian friends were raising funds to pay for his treatment. Police said the Ukrainian Embassy and Artur's relatives have been informed of the accident.
The cabbie was identified by authorities as Thai native Napaspong Tipprapai, 37. Officers have not yet clarified what charges he will face.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Patiwat Yodkwan said: 'The taxi driver will be interviewed to find if he was driving dangerous. We are also waiting to check the injuries of the foreign man to see how serious the case is.'
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
