Schoolgirl rescued after clinging to tree branch in swollen river
This is the dramatic moment a trapped schoolgirl was rescued from a swollen river in Thailand.
The youngster was seen clinging for dear life onto a broken tree jutting out of the surging Kok River in Chiang Mai on Monday.
Emergency crews launched a rescue mission after locals reported that the girl, still in her school uniform, was struggling to stay above the water.
Footage shows the child visibly exhausted, slumping onto the wood after being battered by the torrent. Rescuers moved their boat closer to the tree and carefully lifted her to safety.
An officer said: 'She was so tired and she was barely responsive as we carried her onto the boat. We gave her first aid before rushing her to the Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital for treatment.'
Authorities said they were investigating how the schoolgirl fell into the river.
Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
