STORYLINE:

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said on Monday that Israel's attack on the Gaza Strip will not bring security to Israel, but threaten the security of the entire region.

Safadi made the remarks at a meeting in the capital Amman with Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, during which the two ministers focused on the development in Gaza, the efforts to halt the conflict and the humanitarian catastrophe in the strip, according to a statement by the ministry.

In a joint press conference following the meeting, Safadi stressed that Jordan calls for an immediate cessation of the hostility on Gaza, and the adoption of effective mechanisms to deliver all the needed assistance to the strip.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): AYMAN SAFADI, Jordanian Foreign Minister
"I confirmed that our position in the Kingdom has been a clear and consistent position since the beginning of the aggression, which is to immediately stop this aggression, reject any justification or pretext for prolonging it, and adopt immediate and effective mechanisms to deliver all the aid that the Gaza Strip needs, taking into account that what has entered Gaza so far, under UN estimates, does not exceed ten percent of the needs."

For his part, the Greek minister said "Jordan is a key player in the region, and we share a common vision that the region should be stable, free from wars and conflicts, with the prerequisite being to find a sustainable solution to the Palestinian issue."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): GIORGOS GERAPETRITIS, Greek Foreign Minister
"Jordan is one of the crucial actors in the region with whom we share a common vision which is to live in a secure, stable region, free of wars, rivalries, and disputes. A prerequisite for this is finding a sustainable solution to the Palestinian issue. Greece has long and consistently supported the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, which will coexist peacefully with Israel with internationally recognized borders based on the pre-1967 borderline and with East Jerusalem as the capital city."
