Thai police arrested two suspected smugglers delivering drugs into the country from war-torn Myanmar.

Cops detained two men as they were transporting five sacks of amphetamine pills from the notorious meth production area of Shan State into Chiang Rai province in northern Thailand on February 4.

The operation came after authorities on February 3 learned of the scheduled contraband shipment near the Thai-Myanmar border.

Narcotics suppression police set up a checkpoint along Phahonyothin Road and caught the suspects as they were driving Isuzu and Toyota pickup trucks.

Police pulled them over for inspection and found five sacks each containing around 200,000 amphetamine pills inside the vehicles. They were hoping to flood the nightclubs of Bangkok with the cheap pills.

Authorities said the unnamed men were detained and will be prosecuted according to the law.

Last month, soldiers shot dead two suspected drug smugglers in a gun fight in the same province.

The Thai army intercepted 10 men carrying sacks through a field in the mountains near the Mae Chan and Mae Fah Luang districts on January 6.

However, the group reportedly opened fire on the officers, sparking a shoot-out that left two of the suspects dead.

Thailand has become a notorious hub for drug production and trafficking. In the north of the country, the ‘Golden Triangle' area shares borders with Laos and Myanmar, and has produced large amounts of opium since the 1950s but focus in recent years has shifted to the more profitable methamphetamine.

Officials believe most of the meth is produced in the Shan State of Myanmar before being distributed through neighbouring countries where prices are higher before ending up in the most expensive markets of Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore.
