A bungling tourist was soaked when he crashed his rented scooter into a pond in Thailand.

The holidaymaker was circling a temple on the two-wheeler when he mistakenly pressed the accelerator.

He lost control, plunging into a fishing pond at the Wat Mai Samran temple in Chonburi as locals rushed to help him on Sunday.

Footage shows the embarrassed tourist laughing at himself while Buddhist monks dragged the fallen scooter out of the water.

Onlooker Kanya Modthong said: 'I saw a foreign couple arrive at the temple. They looked wealthy. The woman got off the motorcycle to take photos of the temple and the statue of Thao Thep Suwan, while the man rode around on his bike. Then, all of a sudden, he accelerated and crashed straight into the pond.

'Everyone, including the monks, rushed to help him. He wasn't hurt, just completely soaked and embarrassed. His girlfriend couldn't stop laughing and even asked to take photos of him.'

The couple have apologised to the scooter rental operator and agreed to have the damaged vehicle repaired.
