STORYLINE:

A seminar on the understanding and implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement kicked off in Nay Pyi Taw on Monday, bringing representatives from six Lancang-Mekong countries together.

The three-day seminar was organized under the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation framework.

Speaking at the opening event, Zheng Zhihong, minister counselor of the Chinese embassy in Myanmar, said the RCEP is a free trade agreement with the largest participating population, the greatest economic scale, and the greatest development potential in the world.

It is significant for RCEP member countries to strengthen exchanges and mutual learning, Zheng said, adding that the support from the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Special Fund for Myanmar to host the seminar will yield promising outcomes for the region.

As the largest economy among RCEP members, China has always adhered to the concept of open development, promoting the high-quality implementation of the RCEP, the Chinese official said.

He added that China is willing to further enhance regional trade and investment facilitation with Lancang-Mekong countries, improve the ecosystem for business, continuously enhance regional economic integration, and jointly build a closer Lancang-Mekong community with a shared future.

Myanmar's Union Minister for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations Dr. Kan Zaw said that the seminar aims to promote a deeper understanding and more effective implementation of the RCEP and to exchange the good practices and experiences of RCEP implementation among the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation member countries.

U Win Zeyar Tun, vice chair of the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation National Coordination Unit Myanmar, said that all Mekong-Lancang Cooperation member countries are signatories to the RCEP.

The seminar is designed to disseminate knowledge, good practices and experiences of the RCEP agreement to all stakeholders from Mekong-Lancang Cooperation countries in both government and private sectors, he added.

More than 70 representatives from six Lancang-Mekong countries, namely China, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, have participated in the seminar.
