STORYLINE:
Lu Yusheng, a Chinese national lawmaker, is a native of Xi'an Village in Yongtai County, southeast China's Fujian Province.
After completing his high school education, Lu left his village to seek employment outside. Through years of hard work, he opened his own factory. Although his financial situation had been improved, Lu found himself longing for his roots.
Upon returning to his hometown in 2006, Lu found that many villagers still lived in poverty. As Xi'an Village has a long history of tea-oil tree planting, Lu decided to establish a cooperative to help locals live a better life.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): LU YUSHENG, Chinese national lawmaker
"More than 100 households have invested in the cooperative. More than 2,000 mu (about 133 hectares) of tea-oil trees have been planted. Our cooperative has boosted the development of tea-oil industry, and employed over 300 people who used to stay idle in Xi'an and surrounding villages. It also brings an additional annual income of about 10,000 to 20,000 yuan (1,400-2,800 USD) for each farmer."
SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): LU ZHENYU, Resident of Xi'an Village, Fujian Province
"Our village was in the remote countryside, and transportation was not well-developed. In the past few years, with the help of national policies and the progress in rural revitalization, many folks have come back to start their businesses here."
Lu was elected a deputy to the National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature in 2018, and was re-elected in 2023.
SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): LU YUSHENG, Chinese national lawmaker
"This year, I will bring several suggestions (to the NPC). One suggestion is about the development of the tea-oil industry (in Yongtai County) and another is to set up a tea-oil industry fund dedicated to the development, promotion, sales, and planting technology of tea-oil trees. In rural revitalization, industry comes first."
