First Responders Execute Rescue Mission on Clark Memorial Bridge in Louisville, KY, USA
This footage was filmed and produced 1 March 2024.
First responders in Louisville, Kentucky, successfully rescued the driver of a semi-truck that was left hanging above the Ohio River following a dramatic crash on the Clark Memorial Bridge. The incident occurred on Friday around noon when the semi, believed to be traveling northbound, veered into the southbound lanes of the bridge and crashed through the guardrail.
Chief Brian O’Neill of the Louisville Fire Department reported that fire crews quickly responded within three minutes of the call. Firefighters were able to communicate with the trapped semi driver, who was the only person in the cab of the vehicle. The driver, a female, was extricated and then transported to the University of Louisville Hospital by emergency medical services. Louisville Metro Police Department confirmed that she was conscious and alert, with injuries deemed non-life-threatening.
Utilizing a ladder truck, firefighter Bryce Carden was lowered to the driver’s side of the hanging rig. Carden skillfully secured the driver with a harness, released her from the seatbelt, and, together, they were safely lifted up to the bridge deck by fellow firefighters.
Apart from the semi-truck, three other vehicles - two passenger cars and a pickup truck - were involved in the collision. Two individuals in one of the vehicles sustained severe injuries and were also transported to UofL Hospital for treatment.
The Clark Memorial Bridge, a vital route connecting U.S. 31 between Louisville and Jeffersonville, Indiana, is currently closed as authorities work on determining the best course of action to remove the suspended semi.
