Medics have saved a man's life after he swallowed a pair of scissors and three cigarette lighters while he was drunk.

Patient Mr Li, reportedly in his 40s, was rushed to the Emergency Department of Fuyong People's Hospital in Shenzhen, China, on March 5.

Following a night of drinking, Li admitted he had foolishly swallowed cigarette lighters and a pair of sharp metal scissors that could pierce through his stomach wall at any moment.

Faced with the emergency, Director Li Junda from the hospital's Digestive Endoscopy Centre prepared Li for an urgent operation.

An endoscopic examination confirmed the presence of the scissors and three lighters wrapped in tin foil in the man's stomach.

Under endoscopy, the doctors carefully manoeuvered the scissors and carefully pulled them out.

It reportedly took another hour of operating to extract the lighters.

Director Li Junda explained that despite the seemingly simple endoscopic removal of foreign objects, the actual operation was challenging.

If not handled properly, the extraction of foreign objects could have easily caused secondary damage.

Huang Mingyi, Assistant Director of the Digestive Endoscopy Centre, explained that foreign bodies in the digestive tract are one of the most critical conditions in the field of gastroenterology.

In severe cases, it can cause complete oesophageal obstruction, symptoms of tracheal compression such as difficulty breathing and shortness of breath, digestive tract bleeding, perforation, and evenpiercing major arteries leading to death.

For foreign objects that cannot be expelled from the body in time, endoscopic removal is the preferred treatment option.
