A Thai philanthropist dressed in a 15th-century outfit and rode an elephant while throwing money to the poor in Thailand.

Footage shows Chaweewan Khampa, president of the Royal Poultry Association, throwing wads of banknotes as impoverished locals scrambled to scoop up the money during the Buddhist 'Mahachat merit-making' ceremony in Khon Kaen province on March 10.

Dozens of elderly, disabled, and underprivileged people attended the rite at the Wat Sawang Non Phiang temple, and each received a 1,000 baht cash handout.

In the afternoon, Chaweewan led the procession in which she showered eager residents with 20 to 1,000 baht bills. She was reported to have given away 500,000 baht (14,130 USD) for the ceremony.

The wealthy benefactress, who appeared to enjoy roleplaying as 15th-century Siamese nobility, said: 'The act of making merit and scattering banknotes has been a tradition followed by Thai Buddhists since ancient times. It is believed that those who listen to the Mahachat sermon will receive great merit and also gain insights into the past lives of the Buddha.

'The elderly received their money first because the young and healthy locals can get their share in the afternoon parade.'

She added that she has been participating in the ceremony for more than 10 consecutive years and will continue to do so while she is physically able to join.
