A sinkhole appeared in the Lancaster to Barrow in Furness railway line, which caused the derailment of the 'double set' train from Manchester airport to Barrow in Furness just outside Grange over Sands at 06:10 on Friday 22/03/24. * people on the train were safely evacuated. 4 railway employees, and 4 passengers, all without injury. The front 'set' ( 3 DMU's) derailed after hitting a 'sinkhole' caused by a leaking rising pumped main, which pumped ground water from the local area, into Morecambe bay. The rear 'set' remained on the rails, which potentially prevented the front 'set' from overturning onto the beach. All 3 carriages of the front 'set' were derailed, and demolished several metres of sea wall, spreading debris across the sand below. The sinkhole swallowed ballast, and sleepers from the railway, leaving twin rails suspended in the air as the train passed over. Thankfully no-one was injured, but the Lancaster to Barrow in Furness line may well remain closed for a long period, whilst recovery, and repair / reinstatement take place.
