A recent train derailment near Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria, was caused by a sinkhole. The Northern train, carrying four passengers and four staff, was travelling towards Barrow when it derailed. Engineers discovered a void in the ground about 150m from the derailment location. The hole could be over a culvert from Grange golf course, which runs adjacent to the line. Heavy rain, which had flooded land close to the rail line, is suspected to have contributed to the sinkhole. All passengers and staff were uninjured. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has been called to conduct a thorough investigation. The incident has caused significant disruption to services on the Furness Line, with Northern expecting disruption to last until April. This event underscores the impact of natural phenomena on infrastructure.
