Train derailment in Argentina leaves dozens injured
A train derailed in Argentina leaving 19 people injured as railway services were disrupted.
The train reportedly veered off the tracks while approaching Liniers station in Buenos Aires on Tuesday afternoon.
Passengers reported hearing a loud 'crack' at around 3:50 pm local time, shortly before the train jolted violently, sending people lurching from their seats.
Medics and firefighters were sent to the scene, where they found several train cars lying next to the tracks. Staff surveyed the interior and found sections of the floor damaged.
Alberto Crescenti, director of the Emergency Medical Assistance System (SAME), said: 'There are no fatalities. There are nine moderately injured people, and ten others were treated by human factors teams, including psychologists and psychiatrists, and we did not have to transfer them to hospitals.'
The train service was disrupted but later restored at 6 pm. However, Liniers station remained closed.
Authorities believe the derailment was caused by 'a problem with the track switch'. An investigation was ongoing to determine the exact cause.
The train driver has reportedly been ordered to undergo alcohol tests. The local court also ordered the Argentine Federal Police to investigate the signalmen and analyse audio logs from before the accident.
