Revolutionary AI cemetery in China offers virtual reunion with departed, redefining memorial experiences
A revolutionary AI cemetery in eastern China offered a virtual reunion with departed, redefining memorial experiences.
The video was filmed in Hangzhou City in Zhejiang Province on March 26.
In a pioneering move that intertwines technology with the tender process of mourning, Anxian Cemetery has launched its "Boundless" digital life experience space, heralding a new era in personalised memorial services.
This cutting-edge initiative, the first of its kind in the province, seamlessly blends AI-powered remembrance, therapeutic meditation, and a host of other services to create an exclusive space dedicated to commemorating loved ones.
Spearheading this innovative approach to memorialisation, Shan Lu, the Deputy General Manager of Anxian Cemetery, revealed that the cemetery began exploring services aimed at "restoring" the deceased as early as 2022. With the aim of bridging the gap between the living and the departed, Anxian has harnessed digital twin technology, artificial intelligence, and elements of the metaverse to facilitate poignant reunions across the barriers of time and space.
Now, with advancements in technology, the cemetery is able to offer even more lifelike restorations of the deceased. Families can contribute videos, recordings, and photographs of their loved ones, enabling AI to recreate their images and even engage in "conversations" with them. The more material provided, the quicker AI can learn and the more "real" the restoration becomes.
At the heart of the "Boundless" space is "Xiao Wu," a guide created through extensive input of materials and technological innovation, capable of offering a more interactive experience.
Shan emphasised that as the first digital life experience space in the province, "Boundless" shatters the conventions of the funeral industry, offering the deceased personalised spaces for remembrance. AI Xiao Wu guides families through sessions of reflection, healing, and prayer, embodying the philosophy of focusing more on commemorating life than on the burial itself.
In essence, the digital life experience space serves as a hall of remembrance, showcasing images of loved ones and guiding families in their journey of grief. It offers solace to bereaved families, allowing them to converse with a digital personification of their departed, providing emotional comfort in a uniquely modern way.
This innovative approach not only honors the memory of the departed but also offers a beacon of comfort and healing to those left behind, marking a significant evolution in the way we commemorate and connect with our loved ones.
