A city in southern China has been pummelled by a torrential rain, leading to devastating floods.

Video filmed in Shanguan City in Guangdong Province on April 21, shows residents moving along the roads submerged by deep floodwater.

The severe weather was influenced by a combination of factors including an upper trough, shear line, and weak cold air. As a result, river levels soared, causing serious urban water logging.

As of 7:00 p.m. pm on April 20, Shaoguan has recorded an astonishing average rainfall of 518.2 millimetres for April, a figure that is more than three times the normal for this time of year, which stands at 129.9 millimetres. This year’s deluge has shattered the historical record for the same period, previously set in 1951 at 477.3 millimetres.
