Colorado, USA - 19.04.2024

Pine River Irrigation District dam tender Mike Canterbury prepared to release water down the spillway and discovered two mountain lions in trouble. Two young mountain lions were trapped in a spillway, unable to escape the oncoming rush of water into Vallecito Reservoir.

Canterbury immediately alerted Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), calling wildlife officer Ty Smith to the scene.

PRID Superintendent Ken Beck and Canterbury decided to delay the water release, presenting a crucial opportunity for the rescue operation. CPW was given access to the hydroelectric power plant's property, allowing them to mount an operation to rescue the endangered cats. The mountain lions were successfully rescued.
