Peru: bus plunges into 200-metre abyss, leaving at least 25 dead

A tragic accident unfolded in the Cajamarca region of Peru, where a bus fell 200 metres into the Sendamal River with more than 50 people on board last Sunday night, leaving 25 dead and 15 injured.
According to information from the National Police, the incident occurred at around 22:00 hours, when the bus was on its way to the town of Sorochuco. "The road is quite rough, it is a dirt road with holes and the bus fell into an abyss," said prosecutor Olga Bobadilla, according to La Republica.
Firefighters and police arrived at the scene to attend to the emergency, where they rescued the survivors who were taken to various medical centres, some of whom died on the way. Rescue efforts are still underway to find more victims.
The Provincial Municipality of Celendin issued a communique to inform that the city of Celendin was declared in mourning for 72 hours, due to the accident that left 25 dead and 15 injured.
"We ask for a thorough investigation to determine responsibilities. From the mayor's office, we will declare 72 hours of provincial mourning," the document reads.
