Customs seize 51 ivory beads concealed inside luggage handle at Chinese airport
Customs seized 51 ivory beads concealed inside a luggage handle at an airport in China.
The video was filmed at Beijing Daxing International Airport on April 20.
A recent international flight landed at the airport, sparking a tense encounter between customs officials and a passenger whose checked baggage raised suspicions upon screening.
Customs officers swiftly took action when anomalies were detected in the X-ray images of the passenger's luggage, coupled with the individual's increasingly nervous demeanour during questioning.
"We noticed signs of tampering with the luggage despite no obvious irregularities in its contents. The passenger's evasive responses and heightened anxiety further raised red flags," revealed a customs official.
Upon closer inspection, authorities made a startling discovery: concealed within the luggage handle were dozens of ivory beads meticulously wrapped in tin foil. The passenger had resorted to this clandestine method in an attempt to evade customs scrutiny.
A total of 51 ivory beads, each approximately two centimetres in diameter, were confiscated on-site. The passenger confessed to concealing the contraband in hopes that its bead-like appearance would go unnoticed, only to be caught red-handed by vigilant customs officers.
Customs officials reiterated the severity of smuggling endangered wildlife products, stressing that such actions violate international treaties and domestic laws, with criminal charges awaiting those found guilty.
