A Russian man was found dead in a canal with multiple cuts on his wrists in Bangkok, Thailand.

Asonov Konstantin, 40, was discovered hanging from the Hua Lamphong Canal fence near Soi Santiphap on May 1.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Saknarin Tratsupab of the Bangrak Police Station said the police received a report at 8 am.

They arrived at the scene to retrieve Asonov, who is believed to have been dead for around two days. A shoelace was tied around his neck while he had 10 cuts on his wrists and along his forearms.

He was wearing only a pair of shorts which contained his passport. A broken bloodstained bottle was also found on the canal's walkway.

Locals said the Russian man appeared to be homeless, and was often seen mumbling to himself, loitering near a shrine in the area, or sleeping along the footpath next to the canal.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Saknarin said: 'After talking to the locals, we believe the victim was stressed and used the broken glass bottle to cut himself. Then, he tied a shoelace around his neck and secured it to the fence before plunging into the water.

'However, we are not ruling out the possibility of foul play yet.'

Asonov's body was taken to the Police General Hospital for a post-mortem exam to determine the cause of death. Authorities have also contacted the Russian Embassy to inform his relatives of his death.

Thailand has seen an influx of Russians seeking safety since the conflict erupted with Ukraine last year.

Despite concerns surrounding continued law-breaking from some of them, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has welcomed the influx of foreign cash and even courted reviled Russian leader Vladimir Putin. In October last year, he invited the former KGB officer to visit Thailand to strengthen ties between the two countries.
