Huawei Technologies in Malawi donated e-government smart office equipment on Wednesday to bolster the country's digitalization efforts.
Gu Mu, managing director of Huawei Technologies in Malawi, said that the donation demonstrates the company's commitment to supporting the Malawian government in promoting information and communications technology (ICT) in the country. The equipment, which includes five Huawei IdeaHubs, will facilitate intelligent collaboration in meeting rooms, online meetings, keynote speeches and other presentations.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): GU MU, Managing director of Huawei Technologies in Malawi
"We donated this smart office equipment to the Malawi government to show our commitment to social responsibility."
Gu said that the equipment will play a crucial role in achieving Malawi's 2063 Vision, which recognizes ICT as vital for the country's development.
Malawian Minister of Information and Digitalization Moses Kunkuyu praised Huawei for the donation and urged the company to continue supporting the country in various areas.
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): MOSES KUNKUYU, Malawian Minister of Information and Digitalization
"It is a timely donation that we have received. It will enhance the digitalization drive that we are driving as a ministry with ministries, departments and agencies of government. It will also reduce the inefficiencies that we have been having. You know when you have to travel both locally and internationally just to attend conferences that you can as well do virtually, the costs are high and that affects our fiscal discipline. So, we are living in a very tight fiscal situation, and we cannot afford that actualization. So, the coming in of this equipment with video conferencing capabilities will help us to remain within the fiscal discipline that the president is preaching."
He also called on Huawei to increase its corporate social responsibility efforts and help bridge the digital divide by making smart devices more affordable, enabling all Malawians to fully participate in the digitalization agenda.
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): MOSES KUNKUYU, Malawian Minister of Information and Digitalization
"We are living in a digital era and where we have companies like Huawei almost stationed in Malawi for the past 13 or so years. That our expectation is that they will also hold our hand in other areas like ensuring that we have access to digital devices, smart devices in the country at a lower cost because one thing that hinders people from fully participating on the digitisation agenda is the cost of smart gadgets."
