An adorable dog is believed to be the first ever pooch to climb every mountain in England.

Bentley, a nine-year-old Jack Russell, has climbed all 180 Hewitt mountains in England with his owner Jon Birtle, 55.

The pair started the challenge when they climbed Pen-y-ghent in the Yorkshire Dales and finished it on May 5 when they went to the top of Place Fell in the Lake District.

Bentley is now believed to be the first dog in the UK to do this so Jon 'gave him a kiss and thanked' him when they finally completed the challenge.

He said: "I just got to the top, gave Bentley a kiss and thanked him because he's helped me. "

"We've all got a million things going on in our lives but I would go up the mountain with Bentley and come back cleansed. "

"It was like a weight was lifted because of the sense of achievement but also because I had cleared my head."

"I'm pretty sure that Bentley is the only dog to have ever done this."

Jon decided to climb Pen-y-ghent with Bentley to celebrate his 50th birthday around five years ago and then the pair decided to complete the Yorkshire Dales.

After that, Jon decided they would try to climb every mountain in England and they started it just after lockdown.

The dad-of-two said: "When I turned 50, I decided to take the day off work and climb a mountain - I don't know where it came from but off we went."

"We climbed Pen-y-ghent and had a really great day so then we did Ingleborough and it snowballed from there really."

"We then started doing the Yorkshire Dales and finished that just before lockdown. "

"I then wondered how many mountains there were in England and then we just made a start on that inbetween lockdowns. "

"We just kept going on but now after five years, we've completed it."

Despite Bentley being nine-years-old, Jon says he's 'as fit as a fleece' and is always desperate to race to the top of the mountain.

Jon, who posts about Bentley on X account @Bentleydog70, said: "He's just turned nine and he's as fit as a fleece. "

"He's got a few grey hairs but haven't we all."

"He might get a lot more exercise than other dogs because he's climbed all the mountains but you know he enjoys it because he's always infront of me. "

"He's always desperate to get in front of me."

"There's a few times he's got a bit lost and he's sniffed out the paths."

"He sleeps in the car on the way home and then he will go back onto the garden and barks and wants his ball throwing for him."

Jon, of Harrogate, North Yorks,. says that some of the walks have been 'out of this world' and that his favourite ones have been in the Lake District.

He said: "Some of the walks in the Lake District are absolutely out of this world."

"I go skiing in Italy every year so I've been around mountains but some of the mountains in the Lake District are the best."

"We loved one called Bowfell and Pike of Blisco and there's an area called the Langdales which I think is one of my favourite places in the whole of the UK."

"There's a couple of nice pubs and campsites there, it's just a wonderful area."
