Shop sells pieces of durian fruit for one baht in Thailand
A shop sold pieces of ‘king of fruit' durian for just one baht (0.022 GBP) in Thailand.
The Kirk Durian Shop in Samut Prakan province had customers from different parts of the country travelling to line up at their store so they could buy the affordable pungent fruit, which is normally around 200 Baht (4.36 GBP) for a large piece .
Footage shows the shop vendors breaking open the fresh durian with a kitchen knife to get its meat and pack it into containers.
The packed durian fruit costs only one baht to 100 baht (2.18 GBP) depending on weight, which is a relatively affordable price as it could fetch thousands of dollars depending on quality at fruit auctions.
Customer Kusuma Meesuk, 32, said: ‘I love durian but the prices were high this year. I learned about that shop and I promptly went there to visit.
‘The chance to buy them in packs at reasonable prices is rare. They also taste good instead of buying a whole fruit for 1,000 baht (21.85 GBP).
The shop's owner Thanatapon Klaibandit, 28, said: ‘I came up with the idea out of empathy for those who have low budget.
‘We offer durians in quantities that are affordable. We purchased the monthong durians from Chanthaburi province and divided them for sale.'
Due to the number of customers, the shop now had to ask people to queue and take tickets to wait for their turn.
Thailand is one of the world's largest producers and exporters of durian. The durian is sometimes referred to as the 'king of fruits in the country.
Prices vary widely based on the specific variety, time of year, and growing region but top quality durians rarely come cheap. The most sought-after and expensive Thai varieties like Monthong, Chanee, and Kanyao can cost up to 400 baht (8.74 GBP) per kg or even higher.
